What if you come up with an idea for a mission or ministry that God has impressed upon you and you don't know the steps to take? Here are some simple steps to see if God desires to bless this particular effort..
1. Spend some extended time in prayer over the idea. Some may want to fast for a time to seek God's leadership.
2. Listen carefully to bible studies, sermons, music lyrics, and everyday conversations to see if there are hints or suggestions that others are tuned into this ministry or mission idea.
3. Start your research. Begin talking to some Christian friends and leaders about your idea. Is their response positive? Begin searching for books and other materials on your idea. Are other churches doing this?
4. After some basic research, make an appointment with a staff member that may best relate to this area of mission or ministry and share your idea. This will help make sure there is not something similar in the church or community already in place to become involved. The staff member will most likely give you some suggestions to continue to pray and seek direction and guidance from others.
5. If there seems to be no barriers that come up, ask God to show you some clues that He is ready to bring this idea to the next step.
6. Begin dreaming of the proper organization necessary for the idea and begin in earnest in talking with others who may have a similar passion. It will be very important to ask for God's leadership in every step at this point. Write out a purpose statement. Your purpose statement should clearly support the work of the church and glorify God's Kingdom. Watch carefully for open doors or doors that seem to be closed. If God's hand is in it this at this time, He will begin to send people and make resources available.
7. Talk with a staff member again and begin planning an interest meeting to see what people in the church may be interested in helping.
8. Begin meeting with a small group who seem to have the same passion to help with ideas, organization, resources, budget, and how to begin. Ask a staff member to meet with you for guidance and general policies required by the church. Seek God's direction in organizational leaders.
9. With God's leadership at each step and no barriers become evident, begin planning your launch date.
10. Publicize, enlist, publish information, and work hard to make a smooth, well-thought out beginning.
11. After beginning the ministry or mission, always evaluate each step taken and keep communication open by meeting regularly with leadership. Continue to keep the church informed of the work.
12. Is this a ministry or mission that will be active for only a certain time or will it continue and be evaluated at different time intervals. Are there other areas to explore that God is opening up for you?
13. Give thanks to God for His guidance in this mission or ministry.
Note: These ideas are designed to help those who have a group work in
mind. We know that some will want to launch individual personal ministries
or missions. Some of the steps above may not apply. You may still want
to seek council from people in the church who can give guidance and suggestions.
It is always a good idea to seek an accountability partner to help keep
you on track with your ministry or mission work and be able to support
you in prayer. Inform a staff member of your mission or ministry. We would
love to be some of your best cheerleaders and strongly encourage anyone
and everyone in this style of ministry.
