Week 9

The Message: Building a Relationship with a "Missing Person" - Part I

I am just going to venture a guess here - but I would think you will not want to participate in some effort of evangelism that is manipulative, involves pressuring people, and be considered tacky. Am I right? Then, I have some good news. Research tells us that more people come to Christ and grow into a mature relationship with God if they have a genuine, caring friend or relative to show them Christ's love. George Barna is a nationally recognized opinion researcher who has written many books on how people come to Christ and the methods healthy churches use to reach people. Over and over again in his research he has discovered the reason most people come to Christ is a relationship with a Christian who shows them the love of God in a genuine, mature and caring way.

Let's say this from the very start. If you want to build a relationship with a person in order to manipulate them into the kingdom of God, stop right now and read I Corinthians 13:1-3. These verses give us the proper motivation for reaching out to missing people. If love is not the basis for all we do then it becomes as a noisy gong. The best work we can do is when we love a person into the kingdom of God. When we are able to genuinely care for missing people then we are ready to begin building a relationship for Christ.

Just think, if half of the adults that participate in your church's Bible study built a relationship with one person that led a them to Christ, then we would see many more people begin to follow God. Amazing! Would you commit yourself to God in this next year to build that relationship with a missing person? Would you like to see how God works when we pray for his leadership and focus on missing people? Would you enjoy a new adventure in your life seeing if any spiritual matters come up between you and your friend? All I can say is with God on your side and love in your heart how can we miss?

Scripture - Acts 1:8 Jesus said, "You will be filled with power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Action - Again you have a choice. Follow the challenge and allow God to use you as a tool in his wonderful plan of reaching missing people or continue as we have and miss this marvelous blessing of God. It always is our choice.

Prayer - Lord, use this capacity to love you have given me, my desire to be available, and my genuine concern for the missing to show me ways to touch their lives
